Who We Are
Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge National Historic Park is an active and growing parish in the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. The question we are asked the most is “Are you a real church? Do you have a congregation?” The answer is a resounding Yes! We are a growing parish with great people who gather multiple times per week to worship God and be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. We are also a unique parish with a unique mission.
Washington Memorial Chapel was built by and for the American people. It honors George Washington and the Patriots, civilian and military, who struggled and sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. It expresses the belief held by the founders and summarized by Washington himself in a letter to The Rev’d John Rogers on 11 June 1783: “Glorious indeed has been our contest…but in the midst of our joys, I hope we shall not forget that to divine providence is to be ascribed the Glory and the Praise.”
As an architectural gem on the National Register of Historic Places visited annually by tens of thousands of people from across America and throughout the world, Washington Memorial Chapel preserves the sacred memory of the faith and resilience of the men and women who birthed a nation. It has stood since 1903 as a reminder and symbol of the ideals of our great nation.
We hope you will come and worship with us, schedule a tour from one of our docents, enjoy our Cabin Shop Cafe (Log Cabin just behind the Cabin Shop), peruse our Cabin Book Store (behind the Chapel), walk through our 20 acre churchyard, enjoy a concert from our world renowned carillon tower (58 bells ranging from 14 to 8,000 lbs!), and take in the beautiful landscape of Valley Forge.
